RHS Speech and Debate
Why should I join speech and debate club

There are many reasons, but here are just a few:

·         You have a chance to see different high schools and network with other high schoolers from all over the county and region.

·         You get to check out college campuses.

·         You build researching, writing, and speaking skills that can help you succeed in school.

·         You get to meet new people at Reservoir through the club.

·         You can get a chance to compete in tournament events and to advance to state-levels and even the national-level.

·         You can be a part of a great club organization with a dedication to grow and succeed.

·         You get to travel.

More reasons why you should join:

In speech and debate you can compete in different types of events for medals and recognition. There are Student Congress, Lincoln-Douglass, Public Forum, and Policy events. Debate is an excellent way to practice orating (speaking), a skill you will need if you want to go into law or politics. Debate is really fun, and you get to work with some great people and meet some great people during the tournaments.

We also compete in speech and dramatic events. Dramatic Performance, Duo Interpretation, and Children’s Literature are all drama and acting events, requiring some theatre skills. You can also compete in speech events, making and reciting speeches on current events, important issues, and giving speeches made by famous leaders. This really gives you a great opportunity to learn how to talk in front of audiences, which is important, no matter what job you plan to have.

Also, you build speaking, researching, and writing skills. These skills can help you get careers as newscasters, reporters, writers, actors, lawyers, and more.

Last year, we formed our team from scratch, and we still made it to states; Nikhil Khanna even qualified to advance to the national tournament in Omaha, NE. We hope to do even better next year: competing at colleges, making it to the state-level again, and making it to nationals again. So join in!

Notice: Nationals Locations for the Next Two Years: Washington, D.C. & Baltimore.
